About our Alpaca Fiber Products
Our alpacas produce beautiful, soft, and warm fiber used to make fine quality, long lasting products for you to wear, enjoy in your home, and spark your creativity. The herd consists primarily of huacaya alpacas, with the fluffy, teddy-bear like fleece. We also have suri alpaca, which has the long silky fiber. Both fibers are used in the products we offer.
The alpacas are sheared by an expert shearer in April of each year. After shearing, the fiber is skirted to remove vegetable matter and anything we don't want in the end product. During the skirting process, the fiber is also sorted to determine the best use of the fiber. Most of the fiber is used for end products of some sort, so there is very little waste. Even trashy fiber is used in the garden as mulch or added to the compost bin.
During sorting, decision is made about where to send the fiber for processing. Fiber is sent to small cottage fiber mills to make yarn and roving. Some fiber is sent to the New England Alpaca Fiber Pool (NEAFP) to be combined with other farms' fiber to be made into commercially spun and knitted products that are also sold in the farm store and here online. Depending on the harvest and the sorting, fiber is sent out to other business partners to expand our product offerings. Occasionally, raw fiber is available for purchase. You will also find a nice selection of hand-crafted products such as woven shawls, crochet hats and fingerless mitts, knitted scarves, and alpaca rugs.
